ParIS: Partnership in Information Security
European Commission’s Erasmus+ Programme
October, 2014 to September, 2017
Responsibilities: professor/researcher;
Coordinator: University of Luxembourg
Summary: The goal of the project is to establish a consortium of higher education and research organisations active in, or aiming at being active in, the strategic area of security and trust in telecommunications, and to prepare a roadmap and a strategy for the preparation, and the launch at a later stage, of a Joint Master Degree in Security (JMD). The project will also create opportunities for joint actions, such as the organisation of joint Intensive Study Programmes in Security, encouraged to give lectures and conferences at other participating institutions, experiment the different teaching methods, while providing at the same time an appropriate context for additional added values, for instance joint research projects.

Operational Research Center – a center of Excellence
PEst-OE/MAT/UI0152/2013, Strategic Project – UI 152 – 2013-2015, FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia
Funding: 305,872.00€
Coordinator: Luís Gouveia
Responsibilities: Senior Researcher

Objectives: The research activities of the Unit for the next two years will follow three guide lines: i) main research areas; ii) emerging research areas; iii) interdisciplinary research.
i) The areas of Combinatorial / Discrete Optimization and Network Optimization are the main areas of research. In fact, these areas have been considered a hallmark of the Center and it is our intention to maintain the quality and high standards of the past years.
ii) Areas such as Decision Support Systems, Multicriteria Optimization, Optimization in Finance, Neural Computation and Forecasting, and Stochastic Optimization are becoming more and more relevant in the context of OR applications. Past research on these areas, as well as recent research contracts with private and public institutions, involving members of the Center will conduct to an increase in the international and national visibility of the Center by producing outstanding research in these areas. Thus, it is our intention to foster research on these topics.
iii) Following the strategy started a few years ago the Unit intends to continue strengthening interdisciplinary research. Themes such as graph theory and integer programming are very useful in biology, chemistry, forestry, transportation and telecommunications, among others. In fact, a significant part of the “pure” research done in i) is motivated by such applications, with transportation and telecommunicationshaving a significant contribution.

Healthcare Education: an integrative proposal for the Unified Healthcare System
CAPES / Pro-Health Education – Tender No. 024/2010; Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes),  the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC);
2011- 2015;
Coordinator: Cecilia Dias Flores; Responsibilities: external consultant;
Summary: This project aims to strengthen the research line Education and Health Informatics in the Programme in Health Sciences, intensifying the training of professionals committed to education, linked to the needs of the Health System as well as to the development and evaluation of educational technologies: applications (software) and systems for use locally or remotely (web) under the Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre (UFCSPA). The proposed activities use the products and results of previous projects and promote strong interaction, between undergraduate and postgraduate, focused on compliance with the principles of the Health System. The group of faculty involved in this proposal, with different backgrounds, come to contribute to a broad articulation of knowledge. In this sense, the exchange of experiences among researchers in healthcare, information technology and education points to the expansion of boundaries of the individual point of view and also from the group when establishing the articulation of new knowledge as an innovative practice of scientific maturity.
